I'm guessing some species of Melipotis, maybe prolata, a female of which is shown at MPG

on the side of a trailer at night; it then flew under the trailer and I took another shot...

James Adams concurs with this identification. The difference between brownish and blackish versions of the same specimen is attributable to angle of light bringing out the purplish sheen of a very fresh specimen.
