Sean, See here - can you tell which one from the guides? I'm curious to see if they're any good.

I have a feeling it is not S. splendens, but I am not sure why. It was not as black as the one I found last year. S. aloueus looks like a good match.

Alright, it definitely had sutural striae complete. It was more laterally compressed, so perhaps S. aloeus is the one.

You're in the right ..
You're in the right ballpark - really could be only one of two things; female aloeus or a male splendens - and they're close. I wouldn't pay much attention to the color - while there is some overlap, aloeus are generally much larger and even the females have the pronotum more obviously eroded apically.
