Hairy Rove Beetle - Creophilus maxillosus - male

Hairy Rove Beetle - Creophilus maxillosus - Male
St Albans, Franklin County, Vermont, USA
April 19, 2006
Size: 16mm
I collected this from an animal carcas, and placed it in a container with with some other beetles. The others were smaller than this one, and half of them got eaten.

For this impressive gallery of rove beetles. Indeed, had a lecturer to introduce a naive public into the diversity of this group, he would have there a ideal set of excellent pictures!
C. maxillosus, a fierce predator as you could see, is also present in Europe. The broadenend fore tarsi of this one show this is a male specimen.

Thanks Richard
Next time I'll have more containers to keep beetles like this away from the others.
