Shield-Backed Bug -
Acantholomidea porosa
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA
July 7, 2004
This photo was taken at the
Frenchman's Forest Natural Area
. This was a very tiny (5-6 mm) Shieldbacked bug. Much smaller than others I have seen.

according to
ITIS
and
NEARCTICA
, Acantholomidea denticulata and Camirus porosus are two different, valid species. An illustration of a Camirus in
Biologia Centr.Americana
fits well. No image of Acantholomidea found, however.

We're not talking about
Acantholomidea denticulata
(Stal 1870), which is not on the Florida list, and presumably doesn't occur in Florida.
We're talking about
Acantholomidea porosa
(Germar 1839) which is the same species as
Camirus porosus
, so one is a synonym of the other. The question is, which? See previous discussion
here
.

Yes, I understood well.
It´s only, that ITIS does not list this synonymy, nor the combination "A.porosa" is found anywhere in the web with correct citation (Author, date of description).
Both genera seem to be still valid, and the correct genus for porosus will be Camirus.
I think it will be useful to consult an US checklist for the range of denticulata to exclude the possibility that the error in the Florida publication is with the species name, and not the genus name; or to retrieve some information on the genus, that will allow for the same.

the species seems certain...
but the genus name isn't.
Some web sites call it
Camirus porosus
; others call it
Acantholomidea porosa
- one being a synonym of the other (the species was described in 1839 by Germar, who originally placed it in genus
Pachycoris
); see comments and links on
this page

Dr McPherson looked at this image and my recent image -
please see comments at
- hope that this helps rather than muddies the waters further...

So...
should I move it to Acantholomidea? According to the notes I read, it seems like it is a shot of A. denticulata...right?

Genus -
should be safe to move to the
Acantholomidea
genus page for now. According to the comments above on your image, it may more likely be
porosa
, if
denticulata
is really not found in FL... Did you collect this specimen?

did not collect
...but i do have other shots. What key features are we looking for?

interesting...
Should we make a guide page with notes from your dialogue? And list both genera?
