Size: smaller 5 mm, larger 1cm
these ants seem to only work at night, I noticed the colony during the day, no ants, checked after dark, 35 degrees out, the ants were out

Camponotus sp.
I'm thinking Camponotus semitestaceus, but better close ups of the largest workers (and a second opinion from an expert) would make me feel more confident about this.
