Resource
I can't add anything more in terms of identification, but if you're thinking about ants, I have to recommend AntWeb.org. Here's a link to the California Camponotus

http://www.antweb.org/description.do?rank=genus&name=camponotus&project=calants

Good luck!

Camponotus sp.
I'm thinking Camponotus semitestaceus, but better close ups of the largest workers (and a second opinion from an expert) would make me feel more confident about this.
