Coastal Plain pine woods cicada - Neotibicen winnemanna

Coastal Plain pine woods cicada - Neotibicen winnemanna
Lothian, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
August 22, 2007
I was enjoying "The Songs of Insects" book given to me by a friend, and that inspired me to find this old photo and submit it. Found on the twig of pitch pine (Pinus rigida) in a sandy, xeric strip of woods between a sand and gravel mine and a residential street. Easy to approach. What a treat to see! Guessing in the genus Tibicen, possibly davisii?

Tibicen winnemanna
This specimen appears to resemble T. winnemanna. Here in Long Island NY we have pure T. linnei populations and they do not have brownish maculations on the tergites. Additionally the eye color appears a little lighter than an average T. linnei specimen. I have collected a few T. winnemanna in North Carolina that are morphologically similar to the specimen pictured. I have found the bowed costal margin confusing at times as I have seen it in T. canicularis, T. linnei and T. winnemanna.

Tibicen linnei
you can see the characteristic angle on the costa very clearly
