small ant - Myrmecina americana

small ant - Myrmecina americana
Foxboro, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
April 21, 2006
Size: 3mm

Moved
Moved from Myrmecina.
Thanks James. I'll have to find another one of these ants, and get a better picture.

Me, too!

Myrmicinae: Myrmecina
Specifically, this is the widely distributed Myrmecina americana. There are one or two undescribed species in NA, too, but this is the one people usually encounter, typically as singletons or a few extracted from forest litter.

Myrmecina sp. - worker (Myrmicinae)
Overall habitus, color and broad, sulcate thorax match perfectly with one of these discrete ants.

Thanks Richard
for all the identifications. I go to different types of habitat all over New England, so I keep seeing more species of ants, and all the other insects and spiders.
