I have a hunch
this might be an oddly-marked Grote's Sallow (
Copivaleria grotei
); there were many of them around here in late April/early May.
I've sent this and 2 other shots to Jeff Crolla (Lep. Soc. Coordinator for ON/QC) asking for his thoughts. Hopefully will hear back soon.

I think
you are right. This specimen looks similarly to Jim Vargo's photo of Copivaleria grotei at MPG.

further development
I heard back from Jeff Crolla and he also thinks it looks like an unusually pale
Copivaleria grotei
. He said he didn't have Poole's MONA fascicle on the Cuculliinae with him at the time, but Forbes mentions that Manitoba populations of
grotei
are "almost the color of [
Psaphida
]
resumens
." Perhaps this pale form occasionally turns up in Ontario too.
Photos were also sent to Don Lafontaine but he hasn't answered yet. I couldn't find the specimen by Jim Vargo that you referred to. Do you have the link?
Image moved from Moths page to Grote's Sallow page for now.

Lithophane sp.
Probably one of Lithophane (MONA 9885-9928) species.

Thanks
Possibly a
Lithophane
species, but I looked through the appropriate
CBIF page
and none of them seemed to fit. Nothing jumped out on any of the other noctuid pages either :(
