cow carcass Cercyon - Cercyon haemorrhoidalis

cow carcass Cercyon - Cercyon haemorrhoidalis
Anthony Chabot Park, Oakland, Alameda County, California, USA
January 15, 2011
Size: 3mm
I went back to the dead cow and found more of these -- got ventral shots this time (see other post).

The cow is providing me many weeks of entertainment. Have seen around 12 beetle species on or under it.

Moved
Moved from Cercyon.

12 spp is not a lot...
i would expect such a substrate yield at least 3 dozen spp. of staphs alone...

staphs
I did ignore a couple of small staphs ... and didn't dig (much) in the soggy soil under the carcass. Maybe there were more beetles earlier in the decomposition process that I never saw. The carcass was pretty far along when I found it -- which made it somewhat less nauseating to be around.

I haven't seen any dermestids on it (yet).

I wish I had a dead cow in my backyard so I could monitor it more often. But I don't think my neighbors would like that.
