Snow scorpionfly - Boreus brumalis - female

Snow scorpionfly - Boreus brumalis - Female
Pelham, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
February 14, 2011
I've seen quite a few of both eastern Boreus spp. over the past few months, but this is the first one that was doing anything other than just standing around on the snow. She appeared to be ovipositing in the moss, which was growing in a small clump on a dead branch that had recently fallen from the canopy.

Great find Charley!!!
They're supposed to feed on moss, and you captured this association beautifully.

Mosses
Suggestions from non-bryologists suggest that the moss in the photos is a mixture of Ulota crispa and Orthotrichum sp.
