Lebia variegata Dejean -- det. T.L. Erwin
his comment: "a new record for AZ; distribution extends from Colombia thru Mexico to Tamps."

sweet...

Moved from subgenus Lebia.

Why not Lebia analis - the common AZ/TX morph?
See similar BG270527 & BG1630813. Here the imaged coloration patterns of dorsum, legs, palps, antennae fit my several specimens of L. analis from Texas and Arizona. I noticed some intraspecific color variation affecting the palps & antennae. However, the imaged legs and perhaps pronotum do appear deeper red than all my examples, so maybe that's what struck Terry Erwin? We'll never know. Unfortunately, I've noticed frequent distortions of color when comparing my photo-vouchered specimens to the posted images. For now I'll keep Lebia variegata on the post-2012 Registry of Caraboidea as a new USA (AZ) record, but that may change depending on feedback from others. Incidentally, I read the description of Mexican L. variegata by Bates [1881-1884: 229], but found no solid clues to distinguish it from L. analis. Could the two species be synonyms? There is enough here to eliminate similar Lebia scalpta from consideration. Deeper investigation would be a worthwhile project for someone interested!
