Bumble or Carpenter? - Xylocopa virginica - female

Bumble or Carpenter? - Xylocopa virginica - Female
Archbold Biological Station - Lake Placid, Highlands County, Florida, USA
September 11, 2010
OK, this one seems like it should be easy after all the bees I have photographed and Dr. Ascher has been kind enough to identify. I am not sure, though, if I am looking at a Carpenter Bee or Bumble Bee. In favor of Xylocopa virginica is the apparent lack of hair on the top of the abdomen and the more orange than yellow hair on the back of the thorax (I hope I used those terms right). In favor of Bombus is the eyes, which do not look at all like the eyes on the Xylocopa virginica I had previously photographed.
