black+gray mottled Big-Foot Stocking-Trunk Weevil - Notiodes punctatus

black+gray mottled Big-Foot Stocking-Trunk Weevil - Notiodes punctatus
Madrona Marsh Preserve, Torrance, Los Angeles County, California, USA
March 30, 2010
Found on a fence near a vernal marsh.

I'd love to get this at least to subfamily.

I apologize for the poor quality photos.
Feel free to frass afterward.

thanks again, Charlie
describe the frass out of them!

Moved from ID Request.

ID
Notiodes punctatus LeConte A tough group to ID the species, but this one is in a complex with only 2 described species and one undescribed from CA and its scale pattern on the elytra defines it clearly, Denuded specimens are almost impossible to ID without dissection.
There is no revision avilable for all the species. There are at least 6 new species waiting description and probably several more in collections.

Elation ! Thank you so much, Charlie & =V= !!
This is marvelous; to ID such a small weevil to species from such crummy photos !

Thanks also for the info that no revision has been done, and that there is the need for one.

reminds me of Notiodes
size important

Looking very good, =V=, as usual !
And they are associated with wetlands !

I didn't write the size of the specimen, as I don't have any notes on it, but judging from the camera settings, it must have been quite small; probably about 2 mm long.

We have five Notiodes spp. in California, of which N. punctatus is the most common.
BugGuide photos for N. punctatus resemble quite well.
I don't have detailed documentation of Notiodes to check whether the size, and other details match with N. punctatus.

Do you know if there ever was a revision/review done of genus Notiodes ?
