Little Metalmark - Calephelis virginiensis - Male
Holly Shelter Game Lands, Pender County, North Carolina, USA
April 23, 2006
This individual was spotted by sharp-eyed user Will Cook and flew over close enough for me to get a photo. This is close to an early date (April 20) for North Carolina, according to the lepidoptera experts (including Will) who accompanied us. I believe this is the first wild specimen for BugGuide. (See Will's photos of this species here.)

This area is especially notable for its abundance of carnivorous plants. See, for instance, this Nature Conservancy page. There are also a number of uncommon lepidoptera, especially skippers.
