Porpomiris curtulus - Megaloceroea recticornis - male

Porpomiris curtulus - Megaloceroea recticornis - Male
Chibougamau, Nord-du-Québec County, Quebec, Canada
July 16, 2010
Size: A good 10 mm
This is Porpomiris curtulus (Reuter, 1909), or, at the very least, what really looks to be. Formerly known as Mesomiris curtulus, this species can easily be mistaken for Stenodema vicinum, which it strongly ressembles; however, to quote Blatchley 1926, "[it is] readily distinguished by the shorter head and the very short, fine, pubescence of the antennal segments". Antennae longer than body is another trait to distinguish these from S. vicinum.

This male measured a good 10 mm without the antennae, but was one of the biggest specimens of those I've seen; the average is rather around 7 mm.

Megaloceroea recticornis (Geoffroy) female --det.M.D. Schwartz

M. recticornis, eh?
I considered it, but given that none of the 110-plus specimens presented the slightest hint of green, I figured it could as well be something else. Thanks for the correction.

I'll re-verify my specimen though, because, unless I posted the wrong picture, this is definitely a male. I've seen enough Hemipteran genitalia to tell! But I shot a few specimens of the same species, so this one may not be the one I thought of when I posted the pic.
