In-oak-bark pupa/beetle - Synchita fuliginosa

In-oak-bark pupa/beetle - Synchita fuliginosa
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
April 24, 2006
Size: about 3 mm
Here the beetle is possibly halfway to its final color. It has intriguing features: Bristles that, because of their thickness and pattern, resemble the hook side of velcro; and prominent antennal balls that (to me anyway) appear to be composed of just one terminal antennomere.
