No wonder these guys can move so fast!

Seriously, that tail-tuft seems like a bizarre structure. Wonder what function it might have, or what selective pressures gave rise to it? (Seed-like camouflage? Unpalatability?)

issid wax tails
If you look through the files, you will see that they can spread the wax filaments like a fan. Presumably this frightens away parasites and possibly predators as well.

 
Interesting behavioral explanation
Thanks for your response here, Andy. I found two posts among the BugGuide issids apropos to your comment that splaying the filaments might alarm and deter other insects pestering the issids:



I wouldn't have guessed that's what was happening...love to learn about those kinds of interesting tidbits.
