Explanation of Names
Author: Ferris 1942
Range
Believed to have been introduced into the US from Japan, this species was first found in NY in 1908 and is now found from Virginia to Massachusetts, west to Ohio.
Food
Hemlocks (Tsuga) and other conifers.
Remarks
Fiorinia externa will displace the rival scale Nuculaspis tsugue from the nitrogen-rich terminal needles of hemlock trees, relegating it to feeding on mature needles where it incurs reduced fecundity and heavy mortality.(1)
