Windfall maple fly - Xylomya americana

Windfall maple fly - Xylomya americana
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
April 23, 2006
Size: 11 mm body
This is another handsome fly species that came from a rearing container into which I had placed cera*mbycid b*eetle larvae (probably Par*andra) collected from a large maple blown down in the wind gusts of February 16. (This is the same tree from which I gathered dozens of Osmo*derma emeri*cola larvae that are now eclosing.) In the container I had both woodrot/frass from the Osmo*derma chamber and solid dead wood from the areas inhabited by the ceramb*ycids. (Asterisks are to prevent this image from appearing in searches for those words.)

I also discovered and photographed a fly pupa that I suspect is from the same species and am waiting to see what emerges from it before posting pix.

Update
Don Chandler says this is "Xylomya americana - new NH record, we only had a single specimen from Ohio."

Fly
Superb fly. Even finer than the Micropezids. And apparently only 11 or so species in North America.

Thanks Herschel.
