Mississippi Stream Cruiser - Didymops transversa

Mississippi Stream Cruiser - Didymops transversa
Noxubee NWR, Noxbuee County, Mississippi, USA
April 13, 2006
I think I have the ID right. Macromia illinoiensis georgiana would be the other possibility in Mississippi, but I am thinking this is Didymops transversa. For one thing, it has the last few segments of the abdomen expanded. Comments on ID appreciated.

Didymops
A fine photo of one of our favorite dragons! When we first read about a dragonfly named "Didymops", we could hardly wait to find one.
Macromia illinoiensis georgiana flys later in the year and has black abdominal appendages. There are other differences more easily seen than described. Here are links to the two species if you would like to compare them.

Thanks
Thanks, Gayle and Jeannell. You're right, Didymops is one of the better generic names.

I see in my Borror Word Roots that Didymo means double or twin or testes. Sounds better in the original Greek!
