brushy gall? - Andricus quercusfoliatus

brushy gall? - Andricus quercusfoliatus
crystal river, citrus County, Florida, USA
February 20, 2011
Size: about 2-3 cm
Not sure if these are insect-related. I think this is a live oak of some kind. Any thoughts?

Moved from ID Request.

Looks a bit like
Andricus quercusfoliatus, which occurs on live oak.

But I'm sure that's just one possibility of many. Wait to hear from Charley or someone else who actually knows something about galls. :)
