Wingless Scuttle Fly - Puliciphora borinquenensis - female

Wingless Scuttle Fly - Puliciphora borinquenensis - Female
Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA
July 29, 1977
Size: 1.2 mm body
Download high resolution image here.

I captured this individual with many others in 1977 in a trap consisting of a jar with a piece of fish flesh left to rot inside and buried up to its rim in a wooded area. There were hundreds in the jar after a few days. I preserved a few dozen in a vial of 90% isopropanol. The subject specimen is desiccated for imaging. I stabilized it with HMDS(1) to prevent shriveling after removal from the vial.

This image is a CombineZP processed stack of 134 images with a 5.6 micron step taken with a Nikon CFI60 10X 0.25NA microscope objective + Nikon 200mm F4 telephoto lens + Nikon D300 camera (magnification 10X; technique described here).

Puliciphora borinquenensis
Brian Brown has identified this species as Puliciphora borinquenensis Wheeler, "a common and widespread scavanger", after inspecting a sample I mailed to him. I will request a new guide page for it.

See Puliciphora
If I try the key in Manual of Nearctic Diptera I get Puliciphora, but I'm not confident. I suggest asking Brian Brown.

Brian Brown
I sent him a link and ID request upon submission.

Follow-up
Brian has confirmed that it is Puliciphora, and has offered to ID it to species if I send it to him (which I will). This will be the first BG species page under the genus if successful.
