Nursery Web Spider (Pisaurina mira) - feeding behavior - Pisaurina mira - Lilburn, Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA February 27, 2011
This male, captured in January and originally misidentified as female, has grown considerably. With large crickets made available at all times, it feeds about every 7-10 days. In its terrarium, approx. 12x8x6 inches, it has spun a complex of fairly unorganized webs mostly high in corners. It will "rest" there frequently, but "hunts" from under leaves, rocks or a hollow log piece.
Pictured is a sequence of six images, beginning here not more than 30 seconds after initial envenomation. (I noticed the capture from the corner of my eye and it took that half-minute to grab and set up lighting.) The spider has retrieved its prey and perched for feeding. While the prey was moving slightly, he appears to be injecting the prey more for pre-digestion than to subdue it.
