Nicrophorus sp.

I believe this is a Sexton Beetle, genus Nicrophorus. There are a number of species, but most have this sort of orange marking on a black background, and shorter elytra that leave the posterior of the abdomen exposed. Like other Silphidae, they have a ball-shaped apex of the antennae.

dont think its a silphid

looks a little like one the pleasing fungus beetle family Erotylidae they range from 3-20mm so it could be something in this family. but it doesnt look like any siphid I have worked with

Too small?

Nicrophorus looks plausible except for the size -- the Info page says 16-35 mm, but this one was much smaller than that.

You're right, too small

Ooops, I failed to note the size of your beetle. You're right, way too small for any Nicrophorus I've ever seen.

This color scheme always makes me think of a Pleasing Fungus Beetle genus, Megalodacne, but among other differences Megalodacne is also too large to match your beetle.

Well I will keep looking and maybe someone else will chime in with some thoughts here too.
