True Velvet Mite - Allothrombium

True Velvet Mite - Allothrombium
Wildwood Park; Radford, Virginia, USA
March 18, 2011
Size: 3-4 mm
I at first assumed that this was a spider, and then I checked your Guide photos and see that perhaps it is a mite. I am seeing many of these on flowers and other plants. This one was on a tree trunk. Can someone please confirm or correct?

Definitely a mite--I'd say something in the Superfamily Trombidioidea (which includes the Velvet Mites). Let's see what the experts have to say.

Thanks!
Hi Ken, I thought that you would know this one. I'll bet that experts agree with you - they usually do:)
I was pleased to finally get a photo (if a bit blurry) of one of these tiny critters - had been trying for several days.
