tiny lady? -
Stethorus punctillum
Medford, (~25 miles east of Philadelphia, PA) Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
July 17, 2010
Size: 1.3mm
my appologies for all the "dirt" on this one, but beyond that, what is it? A tiny ladybird would be my best guess.

Stethorus punctillum, I'd say
With the punctation not particularly matching Gordon's description of either species, I'm going to go by the postcoxal line. I don't think the range maps from 1985 necessarily accurately represent the current range of the species, especially because it was introduced and, if it's like most introduced spp., has probably been steadily spreading.

species
Thanks v,
From Gordon's ref., I'm leaning toward
S. punctum
vs.
S. punctillum
, based on the "fine" punctation on the elytra and pronotum. But the density seems to significantly less than described for either species.

two conflicting things I noticed :)
Point for S. punctum: Gordon doesn't show S. punctillum south of central NY.
Point for S. punctillum: The postcoxal line is strongly arced, descending past the middle of the sternum, which Gordon describes as typical of S. punctillum; he describes S. punctum with a shallower postcoxal line, not beyond the middle of the sternum. (Admittedly I measured it by holding a ruler up against the screen...)
