Flying Ant - Camponotus vicinus - female

Flying Ant - Camponotus vicinus - Female
Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
April 29, 2006
Size: 20 mm

Moved
Moved from Carpenter Ants.

Alate Camponotus female.
Carpenter ant. Future queen. When they are winged, they are called "alates." The wings are used for dispersal, the insect purposefully tearing them off once she has mated and found a suitable nesting site. Nice image.
