Hairstreak help? - Strymon melinus - Female
Williamson County, Texas, USA

Unlike most hairstreaks, this one showed me only its dorsal surface and perched with wings outspread. The plant it's feeding on is low to the ground, between cactus clumps, so there was no way to get underneath to photograph the undersides of the wings. All my butterfly books show hairstreaks in the more common pose, with wings folded over the back, so I don't know which this is. Note that there seems to be an orange patch on the back of the head.

Gray Hairstreak
The orange spot on the hind wing is a good fieldmark for this species.

I've seen this species before, but only with wings folded--thanks for giving me a field mark for this pose.
