Leaf Beetle - Tricholochmaea kalmiae

Leaf Beetle - Tricholochmaea kalmiae
Edmundston, Madawaska County, New Brunswick, Canada

Not sure which species it is... Probably cavicollis, could someone confirm?

Moved from Tricholochmaea.

Tricholochmaea kalmiae (Fall)
This is Tricholochmaea kalmiae (Fall). Tricholochmaea cavicollis LeConte has solid black antennae, including all the basal segments, unlike the specimen in this photograph. For example, see this photograph. T. cavicollis is usually a deep cherry red, whereas T. kalmiae (associated with laurels such as Kalmia angustifolia) is a more orange in colouration. A key difference is also that in T. cavicollis the elytral side margins are noticeibly thickened, whereas in T. kalmiae they are thiner and taper to an acuminate edge. You can see this difference in examining the specimens depicted in these two photographs.
