Found on the main trunk of an oak tree - probably a coast live oak.

There are some casts with distinct identification features (esp. to Genus).
Platypedia casts are approx. 1 inch long (2.54 cm), hairy in appearance, possess heavily annulated abdomens, and a dark longitudinal stripe running the length of the thorax and abdomen, as seen here.
Additionally, along with Okanagana, these cicadas are among the first to emerge in spring along the West Coast. March eclosion dates are not unusual, esp. in s. Calif.
