This one has me puzzled. I've been through the guide and do not see anything like it. Maybe those dots are not supposed to be there?

Is the compound eye also bilobed? That looks a bit strange.

Eye color in dragonflies...
I've noticed on several of the local dragonflies that the eye color appears to change abruptly from the top of the compound eye (here looking brown) to the lower 2/3 to half of the eye (here looking pearly or grayish.) For instance, I have a picture of a _Dythemis velox_ (Swift Setwing) male from last year, in which the eyes appear cherry cough-drop red on top, and blue on the sides...but it's the same eye. The line of demarkation is sharp, so it does almost look as if there's a red eye on top of a blue eye. I believe that's what you're seeing here, not an actual suture line. (I need to go see if I posted that image...)

Image of multi-colored eyes...
was posted. If you look up Swift Setwing in a search for images, you'll find image #36788, and that's the one I'm talking about (I know there's a way to link to the image, but I can't remember it...sorry)

Whatcha mean?
compound, bilobed? I don't know about you Sean, but I'm only a few miles from you right now and the wind the last couple of days has been terrible. These are the best photos I could get of this guy and I bet I took 30! Going back out tomorrow, see if I find another. Nice big park, lots of water.

The compound eye is just the big eye on either side of the head. The simple eyes are also called ocelli and lie on the head above the compound eyes.
What I mean by bilobed is that there appears to be a suture running along the side of the right compound eye, dividing it in half. I don't believe I have seen this before, or if I have I have forgotten it.
The wind is pretty bad, and photography is difficult. I was in Bradenton yesterday; same story.

I see what you mean.
It does look like the eyes are divided in half. Sure hope I can find another before I leave here next Sunday. Very curious now. Thanks!
