Beige and black bee on salvia - Xylocopa tabaniformis - male

Beige and black bee on salvia - Xylocopa tabaniformis - Male
Alameda County, California, USA
March 29, 2011
This bee and one other that looked like it (possibly two others) maintained a continuous presence around a small stand of Salvia sp. as long as I observed them, flying over the plants and occasionally feeding (the bees, not I, flew and fed). They flew most of the time and made very brief visits to flowers. Afternoon, residential yard in a mixed commercial/residential area, urban; weather had been unseasonably cold and had quickly become unseasonably warm.

The commonly seen bumblebees in this area are yellow and black or all black. These bees' beige color was surprising.

was there at the same time.
