Unknown insect INSIDE northen NJ suburban home - Halyomorpha halys
Tenafly, Bergen County, New Jersey, USA
March 25, 2011
I keep finding this insect in my suburban home in NJ. I've lived here for 7 years and never saw this before until late 2010. The only thing I can think that is different in the last 6-10 months is that I ordered some furniture for my small children and the pieces came in boxes shipped all the way from like Thailand. Could these bugs have been stowaways or some kind of wood beetle in the wood of these pieces of furniture

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
Welcome to the world of the BMSB. The buggers have been explosively expanding their range from Allentown over the past several years. They hide inside houses over the winter to hibernate then show up at this time of year trying to get back out. They are harmless (though they eat leaves). They stink if you squish them. You can vacuum them up if you get a lot of them. They are not in any way related to bad housekeeping. You can try caulking cracks to keep them out, but we here in Somerset County, NJ have had no luck with it. Basically you'll likely have them as visitors every fall and spring from now on.

thank you
Thank you so much, the stink bug. Fascinating! I am going to learn all about them. I have a dissecting microscope in my possession. THese critters are actually quite beautiful. When they fly they sound like a small cessna airplane.
