Big black ants - Formica

Big black ants - Formica
Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, California, USA
April 5, 2011
Size: 5.8 mm bl
On fallen tree trunk next to Merced River near Happy Isles Bridge (elev. ~4000 ft. [1220 m]), noon. The linked photos are of different specimens in one colony. These ants were following a trail that was a looser formation than a typical household-ant trail but tighter than a swarm. Individuals often strayed sideways from the midline of the path or doubled back.
