Sawfly Larva? - Periclista

Sawfly Larva? - Periclista
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
April 3, 2011
Size: around 10 mm
Found on water oak leaf. When first observing this, I thought it was a strange lady beetle larva. But, as can be seen, such is not the case. I couldn't find anything close to this in sawflies, but maybe someone can ID it. The spines are most unusual. Is this a mimicry of lady beetle larvae?

Tenthredinidae, Blennocampinae
Periclista sp. Larvae of these sawflies feed on oaks have bifurcate spines, but there are about 8 species in the East and larvae cannot be identified. Don't know olady beetle larvae well enough to know which might mimic which.

There are larvae with similar spines
in Blennocampini:

But that's not an ID--just a possibility to consider while waiting to hear from folks who actually know something about these critters. :)
