It's the shorthand of nitidologists
just like soshecurity is used inside the Washington beltway for Social Security. And yes, these do resemble nitidulids.

I'll try to eventually run these through a Nitidulidae key. In the mean time I'll try to be more precise on BugGuide. I'd hate to mislead Eric or anyone at the Order or Class level ;)

I call them nits on a regular basis.
So does nitidulid specialist Andrew Cline, who has IDed a bunch of them on bugguide. I'm unfamiliar with this species, but Andrew could probably ID it at a glance, assuming it's a nit.
