Size: ~35mm
On the same trail, we saw a couple of these hairy black caterpillars with orange heads. Their movement was very "twitchy".

Could they possibly be Speared Dagger Moth (Acronicta hasta)?

or Agreeable Tiger Moth (Spilosoma congrua)?
