Geometridae: Alsophilia pometara - Alsophila pometaria - male

Geometridae: Alsophilia pometara - Alsophila pometaria - Male
Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
April 12, 2011
Size: Length ~ 1.5 cm
Update on 28 Jan 2012: Jerry Fauske (NDSU, Fargo) reports "Alsophila pometaria (fall cankerworm) while most aboundant in Fall, does overwinter in small numbers and a few adults occur in the Spring." This looks like it may be one of the few male fall cankerworms that overwintered here in Grand Forks, North Dakota! ;-)

If this is a Fall Cankerworm (Alsophilia pometaria), then I'm surprised to find it in the Spring. I photographed a remarkably similar, if not identical specimen, in Fisher, Minnesota, last October (see Photo # 463359) which I thought was a male Fall Cankerworm Moth because females were abundant in the same place at the same time. My references suggest that adults of this species are not found in the Spring (because the eggs overwinter not the adults). Could this be a male Alsophilia pometaria? If not, help! Thanks for any and all advice. I'm stumped.

Perhaps this is a Paleacrita vernata (Spring Cankerworm Moth) Hodges #6662?

Thanks, John!
You may be right. Moths are pretty rare around here in mid-April, so it must be Spring Cankerworm Moth (rather than a Fall Cankerworm Moth). The puzzling thing to me is that this image and the one for the image for the Fall specimen (see 463359) look identical to me. Do they look strikingly similar to you?
