Why not consider California Darner (A. californica)? That species shares this bug's abdominal pattern of having on each segment two small anterior blue spots and a large posterior patch of blue. Additionally, the terminal apendages are rather short. I don't know California at all well, nor Variable and Shadow, so take all that with at least one grain of salt.
