Predaceous Diving Beetle - Colymbetes sculptilis - male

Predaceous Diving Beetle - Colymbetes sculptilis - Male
Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
April 14, 2011
Size: 17 mm
Found on a sidewalk.

C. sculptilis
I looked up Larson (2000) and I'm now pretty sure it's C. sculptilis based on distributional data. It's the only species of the complex that occurs that far east.

Thanks Tim!
Aedeagal shot coming soon...

Moved

In the C. sculptilis complex
which includes C. exaratus, but if it is really 20 mm, then it might be C. sculptilis. The other species are somewhat smaller. However seeing the male aedeagus (shape and length) is really the best way to tell members of this difficult complex apart. If you have collected it, you can give it a shot and run it through the key in Larson (2000) or alternatively you can send it to me for ID.

male Colymbetes of sorts [exaratus?]
our guys will give you a name for him, i suppose
