Am guessing it is either

Magicicada tredecassini or M. tredecula. Did you photograph the underside by chance?

Magicicada tredecim (?)

Actually, I'm inclined towards Magicicada tredecim (note the brown coloration of the thorax immediately behind the eye/head). However, the quasi-teneral condition makes id a bit difficult in this case.

For what it's worth

Searching through the Magicicada database, I found only records of tredecim and tredecassini for my area (Durham County, NC) from the 1998 emergence. Kim's photos are also from the Carolina Piedmont, but just a bit farther south, so I am betting that is the situation in her area as well. (The Magicicada database does not have any records from her county, and very few from SC.) We seem to have only that one brood of Magicicada in my immediate area--only brood XIX, 13-year critters. I'm guessing that is true for Kim's neighborhood as well.

I realize this is all an area of research and the knowledge is imperfect!
I'm just a bit north of Kim and I expect to see my first Magicicada within a week or two. I found the first of the 1998 brood on 27 April. This winter was very cool, however, so they might be delayed a bit.

I did find a record for M. tredecula in that database from the Piedmont of South Carolina as well--from 1985.
Obviously, very difficult stuff, and pardon my amateur efforts--I am trying to figure out what is going on--what the possibilities are!

You are correct!

The 13 yr Brood XIX is due this year, in fact, we should start to see them any day now across the southern part of the range ... with this being the first report
