magicicada - Magicicada tredecim

magicicada - Magicicada tredecim
Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
April 15, 2011
this is the same cicada as the one photographed on a dead leaf. i accidentally knocked it off the green leaf turning around... the underbelly was yellow with some black but I don't remember precise markings. you can see a bit of the underside here. (feel free to delete any of these excess photos)

yellow underbelly would imply
Magicicada tredecim (I thought I was seeing black below on the other one, but was hard to tell, and was why I asked). This one also has pale color behind the eye more evident. Of course you could already have found two different species of the same brood (odds are against it though). Could also be that if they are still soft, the dark color may not have fully developed yet. Will wait to see what else you find before saying any more. :0)
