Green larva III - Scaeva affinis

Green larva III - Scaeva affinis
Alameda County, California, USA
April 16, 2011
Found on garlic leaf, with ants and aphids, in the same box as , afternoon; possibly the same specimen. Appears to have rather simple prolegs galore and no true legs. I think the head end is at the left, but I'm not sure. The larva can crawl in either direction. Before this photo was taken, the larva was attacked from the rear (i.e., from the right) by ants. It whacked them with its left end and killed some. Later it used the tip of its left end to wipe dead ants, ant fragments, and aphids off its right end. However, one dead or moribund ant still clung to it at the time of the photo.

Syrphid Fly Larva
From the ID of your other post Syrphid Fly Larva makes sense with this behaviour. Bugguide states that the larva are aphid eaters. The ants were likely protecting their aphids.
But this is not an expert opinion.
