Size: 10mm
I'd been seeing these flies hovering over the path, without being able to get any chance of a shot. Then I saw this one floating in a puddle, still barely alive, so I rescued it and got my picture.

I think Melangyna labiatarum
I think Melangyna labiatarum - the wing (specifically the costal cell) looks trichose to me, the scutellum not notably darker along the posterior edge except at the sides, the eye mostly bare with scattered short hairs. In this case the spots on tergites 3-4 don't extend to the lateral edge, also helping to rule out M. subfasciata (along with the range, since I can't see the facial stripe).

This should be a male in the genus Melangyna!
