Live Oak Tussock moth - Orgyia detrita - female

Live Oak Tussock moth - Orgyia detrita - Female
Lady Lake, Lake County, Florida, USA
May 2, 2006
Not long after mating she began laying her eggs, she actually started laying them in the other container, and from reading the info in Wagner's, I knew they lay the eggs on the cocoon, so back to the rearing cage. After laying the eggs, she stuck scales from her body onto the egg mass. Later that day she fell to the floor to die. If I would not have had her in the cage, I guess this process would have only taken one day. What a life.

A
lot like a female bagworm. At least this one comes out.
Great images and notes, Machele.

Thank you
Jeff. I have a couple of bagworms, one still moving around, the other has been hanging in the cage for quite awhile, might not be viable anymore, I don't know, I guess it is wait and see.
