horse flies are rare at my house - Poeciloderas quadripunctatus - Female

Size: ca 15mm
This horsefly is wet because it was in one of my seed sprouting buckets when I hosed it down. Never did fly off so it may be sick. Maybe it got hold of some bad horse meat or donkey. Looks closest to mixus, but for one thing, the smoky spots in the wings are way more pronounced.

Poeciloderas quadripunctatus
This species has now been documented in Central Texas a few times. See, e.g.:
Goodwin, Godwin, and Preston. 2010. Corrections and Addenda to The Horse and Deer Files (Diptera: Tabanidae) of Texas, Including United States, Texas, and Texas County Records. Southwestern Entomologist 35(2):147-155. Here's a link to an abstract on BioOne.

Moved from Horse Flies. I'm reasonably sure this is Tabanus, but this specimen really looks like the Neotropical genus Poeciloderas, one species of which, P. quadrivittatus, gets into Mexico. It's really bothering me.
