Large Male Southern Black Widow - Latrodectus variolus - male

Large Male Southern Black Widow - Latrodectus variolus - Male
Moccasin Lake, Winston, Douglas County, Georgia, USA
April 19, 2011
Size: 7mm body length measured
Large adult male Southern Black Widow. Spider was crossing my patio during hottest part of the day. Interestingly, a small female Wolf Spider(?) with about ten or twelve youngsters clinging to her back was observed a few minutes earlier. This spider was moving along the same exact path including the various turns. I have no idea as to what it means, perhaps a very confused male or possibly something more sinister such as a mid day snack or maybe just a coincidence.

Male Black Widow
Interesting info. I'm not sure what was going on there.

Are you sure it's not a male Northern?

I have to admit I have a hard time telling them apart. I'm not certain which it is.

Correction
I stand corrected. It evidently is a Northern Black Widow as judged from the separated hourglass marking. The comparison photo that you posted is a near twin to mine. Thank you Lynette for bringing that to my attention. Now should I go ahead and move it to the Northern species page?

Yes
If you have checked and think we are right, feel free to move it there. Thanks.
