Trying to choose between
Orthosia revicta and Egira alternans, Wagner Owlets pgs 481 and 482.

Orthosia looks good for the position of the spiracles in the white band, especially on A7. But his early instar image looks very dark under the spiracular stripe. Wagner describes it as feeding on mostly tree species, ash. elm, maple, oak, etc. and says it enters Georgia in the mountains, which we assume is a fair description of Fulton Co.

The position of the spiracle on A7 looks wrong for Egira but the area under the stripe in his early instar image looks light like yours. He describes it as feeding more on shrubs, blueberry, honeysuckle, rhododendron, and describes it as abundant over much of the coastal plain.

Any idea which of these better fits the description of the area you found this guy?

I see these fairly regularly in the spring also.
I wonder whether they might be an earlier instar of this or perhaps a related species?

We would suggest Noctuid, but
don't know what to suggest. Maybe Wagner's next book will help. Any images from other perspectives?

Unfortunately...
This was the only shot that didn't come out as a blurry brown squiggle :/ I'll do my best to get some other angles should I be lucky enough to spot one again.
