Dendroides canadensis (Latreille)
This is Dendroides canadensis (Latreille), our most commonly encountered pyrochroine pyrochroid in eastern NA.

looks like D. ephemeroides; will seek confirmation

I agree, but...
so far that species has only been recorded on the west coast in BG. I can provide head and tail close-ups if that would help. Should I be try to take ventral shots of beetle larvae, too?

and you're of course right about species: the pale one in our 'corner' is called D. concolor, but we have only one photo of its larva so far, and it's not exactly the best one
