These german yellowjackets were nesting on my front porch. Most of the nest was inside the wood. The paper structure was a relatively late addition. The photo was taken at night. I wonder why so many were on the outside at night: guarding the nest? Not enough room inside? During the day, I saw some on the nest fanning their wings, presumably to cool the nest.

Very cool. Any of the yellowjackets find their way into the house? I get calls abut this species pretty frequently from August through November and people first find out they have a nest when they start finding dozens of yellowjackets in the house.

Were you able to open the porch and get the nest?

 
I never saw one in the house,
I never saw one in the house, and I didn't try to take apart the house to get at the nest. They seemed completely non-agressive towards me and visitors. By late fall, the nest seemed to be deserted.
